Micaul Solar Thermal (Hot Water) Systems
Installing a Solar Thermal System not only provides you with up to 70% of your annual hot water needs, can contribute towards your space heating and reduces your CO² emissions by up to 1.1 tonnes, it also enables you to start to take back some control of your energy costs. There is cost to all of us through the continued use of energy supplied by fossil fuels both financial and environmental and this cost is set to continue to rise.
Solar energy is free and is available today and with the cost benefits of installing a solar thermal system being comparable with interest payments you might get from savings, there has never been a better time to invest in Solar.
We have solutions that integrate into existing cylinders and systems including combi boilers and our thermal store solutions enable you to interconnect to other renewable and sustainable energy systems such as wood / wood pellet stoves, air and ground source heat pumps as well as integrated underfloor heating.
Operation and Types of Collectors In simple terms, solar thermal systems use the suns energy to heat water via collectors (panels) which is then stored in a cylinder. This reduces the use of the existing boiler and fuel used to drive them thereby reducing cost and carbon emissions.
Evacuated tube collectors utilise sets of vacuum tubes with a liquid filled copper conductor inside. As the liquid inside the conductor heats up, it rises to the top to a manifold where the heat is exchanged into the water from the cylinder being passed through the manifold.
Flat Plate collectors are typically slightly cheaper than evacuated tube and look more like a skylight when on the roof. They can also be completely integrated into the roof to reduce their profile or even form the actual roof of a building. The water is passed through and heated throughout their whole profile just like a radiator.
Each collector type has its own characteristics ranging from efficiency to aesthetics but whichever collector is chosen, we will design the solar thermal system to integrate into your existing system to maximise the heat collection and storage.
The following gives an indication of the likely solar energy production % over the year.
Solar for Swimming Pools and Jacuzzis Solar Thermal Systems are ideal for heating the water for swimming pools and Jacuzzis. With rising energy costs, traditional methods of heating can cost £100s or even £1000s for both domestic and public swimming pools. In addition to the savings, you can extend the period of use of your outside pool by up to 6-8 weeks per year. Outdoor pools will often be 4-7°C warmer over the summer period than they were without.
